Jan Urban: It was a scrappy game

Poland beat New Zealand 1–0, but the win came at a cost, with Przemysław Frankowski forced off through injury. During the post-match press conference, head coach Jan Urban commented on the injuries in the squad, assessed the team’s overall performance and reflected on individual players.
“I don’t like to single out particular players, but some performed better than others. I looked at the game mainly in terms of fluency. Although there were quite a few shots from both sides, the play itself was rather scrappy. I knew that could happen with so many changes, especially when both teams make numerous substitutions during the match. There are simply too many misunderstandings then. We started the second half well. I liked Michał Skóraś’s performance. He confirmed the good form he’s shown at the club.”
“The debutants did well. It’s a big moment for any player. Everyone dreams about it. Janek and Arek are young lads who also want to make their mark with the national team. I’m pleased with them. They will remember this day a long time, even though it wasn’t a high-stakes match. What matters is that they started with a win. Is Janek a candidate to play in the starting line-up for the match against Lithuania? I’m probably more critical than the journalists. Not just about him, but in general. I demand more before saying someone has reached the national team level. In my opinion, it’s become a bit too easy to get a call-up recently.”
“Kacper Kozłowski had his moments, but I also noticed a few weaknesses, and I keep them in mind. It was a big occasion for him as well, coming back into the squad after a longer break. Whether we call him up again will depend on many factors inclusing his form and that of his competitors. We are constantly analysing the form of the players. A call-up depends on many things. We don’t judge players solely based on their appearances for the national team.”
“I was pleased with Przemek Wiśniewski and Paweł Wszołek. Paweł really livened up the game with his attacking moves. Karol Świderski did the same. Przemek made a few mistakes in building from the back, but defensively he didn’t have major problems.”
“I don’t fully agree that Sebastian Szymański doesn’t show enough of his qualities. He’s a very technically gifted player who can produce something special at any moment. I like such footballers. It’s harder to make any assessments today because the game didn’t really flow. In matches like this, players subconsciously think about avoiding injury.”
“I already know Przemysław Frankowski won’t be available on Sunday. As for the other two players, it remains uncertain whether they’ve suffered minor injuries or something more serious.”
“As for the goalkeepers, not much has been clarified. They didn’t have too much to do. There were a few situations where both could have started the play better from the back, but that might have been difficult on this pitch. It’s been raining constantly lately, the pitch was soft. That’s why we moved the official training session elsewhere.”
