Kamil Grosicki announces retirement from Polish national team. "I am fulfilled"

"Before training I proudly and honourably told the team that this training camp will be my last in the national team. It is a beautiful moment, but also a sad one, because the matches played for a dozen years with the coat of arms of Poland on my chest were always something more for me", Kamil Grosicki told reporters on Monday.

The 36-year-old Pogoń Szczecin player informed head coach Michał Probierz of his decision before training in Hannover and asked for the opportunity to communicate it to the other players. He also shared his decision with journalists after the training session.

"Before training I proudly and honourably told the team that this training camp will be my last in the national team. It is a beautiful moment, but also a sad one, because the matches played for a dozen years with the coat of arms of Poland on my chest were always something more for me.  But the day has come", he said.

Grosicki played 94 games for the national team, in which he scored 17 goals and made 24 assists.

"My dream is to play my farewell match in Poland, I will talk about it with the head coach and president Cezary Kulesza. I hope it will take place. I would like to thank the fans for a dozen years of support, my teammates, especially captain Robert Lewandowski for so many beautiful moments. I would also like to thank the coaches - starting with Adam Nawałka, as well as Michał Probierz, Jerzy Brzęczek, Czesław Michniewicz and others with whom I have worked. I thank presidents Kulesza and Zbigniew Boniek. I would also like to thank you, the journalists, for these years of cooperation, for all the comments, including the criticisms. I thank my family: my wife, my daughter, my parents for their support. They have seen how I have suffered when I have not been called up or have played poorly, but also how I have enjoyed victories and goals. I will always support the national team", stressed Grosicki.

With Grosicki entering the pitch in the match against Austria at Euro 2024, the Pogoń homegrown player became the oldest Polish footballer to play at a major tournament.

"My dream was to participate in this tournament. I achieved it. I made the final decision before the match against the Netherlands. Now is a good time to say that this is the end of this beautiful adventure. My wife couldn't believe it. Many friends, family will know from this statement. I had a beautiful career. Of course there were poorer matches, but I will remember the beautiful moments. The recognition I have gained in football is thanks to the national team. Every match for it was special for me. The meetings at the PGE Narodowy, the singing of the anthem, the goal at the PGE Narodowy, the goal in Romania, the 2016 European Championship and the quarter-final against Portugal, the assist to Robert, the atmosphere in Marseille, every qualification, every big tournament. There were many of these special moments. I also always experienced support from my colleagues, I was liked, it was always fun. I played with many great footballers in the national team: Maciej Żurawski, Jacek Krzynówek, Robert Lewandowski, Kuba Błaszczykowski, Łukasz Piszczek, Piotr Zieliński. I was looking ahead. The moment had come for the coach to go further, to call up younger players to the national team. For me, it is over, I can stand with pride with the national team tomorrow and I hope that we will perform well in the match against France", said Grosicki.
