The announcement of the Polish Football Association | 22 December 2022
The Polish Football Association announces that Czesław Michniewicz will stand down as head coach of the Polish national team as of 31 December 2022.
Last week, Czesław Michniewicz held several meetings with PZPN president Cezary Kulesza, vice-presidents and the management board of PZPN. During them, the head coach summarised the performance of the Polish national team at the World Cup in Qatar and also discussed the organisational aspects of the national team's participation in the World Cup. After a thorough analysis of all the information, PZPN has decided not to extend Czesław Michniewicz's contract, which expires at the end of the year.
"On behalf of the management board of PZPN, we would like to sincerely thank Czesław Michniewicz for his 11 months as head coach. As we know, the coach took over the team at a very difficult time. Despite these circumstances, he managed to secure qualification for the World Cup and also maintained the teams place in the Nations League elite. He also led the national team to its first qualification to the knockout stage of the World Cup in 36 years. For this, Czesław Michniewicz deserves our gratitude," said PZPN president Cezary Kulesza.
"However, in order to properly assess the head coach's work, we also had to take into account other key issues, such as the long-term vision for the future of the national team and the direction of its development. Therefore, after many meetings and analyses, we took the difficult decision to end our cooperation. Czesław Michniewicz is an experienced coach and I am convinced that he won't wait long to be offered a new job. We wish him good luck and further success in his career," added Cezary Kulesza.
At the same time, the PZPN announces that the process of selecting a new head coach to lead the Polish national team in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers will begin in the near future. "We want the national team to be led in the Euro qualifiers by a coach who guarantees its development and the achievement of its goals. The new head coach must also improve the image of the national team and rebuild the trust of the fans. Our choice must be well thought out, so we will not declare specific dates for the presentation of the head coach. At the same time, we assure you that the selection of a new coach is a priority for the management board of PZPN," stressed president Cezary Kulesza.
