Jerzy Brzęczek: We did not create as many chances as we had planned to

"We knew that it would be a very tough match but we wanted to challenge the Netherlands. However, we lacked good offensive play and playmaking. As a result, we did not create as many goal-scoring chances as we had planned to and that is why we lost," said Jerzy Brzęczek, the head coach of the Poland national football team, at a press conference following the Nations League match against the Netherlands (0-1).

"We were aware that the strength of the Netherlands is playmaking and positional play. Our plan was to keep recovering the ball in the middle of the field and we managed to do so for a long time. But then we lacked precise offensive play. We should have played faster, use short passes, and be consistent in looking for our opportunities. We failed and that is why we did not create as many goal-scoring chances as we had planned to and hoped for. Actually, we had one good goal-scoring chance – when Krzysztof Piątek made a shot after a pass from Tomasz Kędziora. If our striker made a ground shot instead of a normal shot, we would have been closer to scoring a goal," admitted Jerzy Brzęczek.

"We took on a very good team with many brilliant players. Of course, you can learn a lot from a match like this, notice new things. We tried to challenge our opponent. We wanted to put our plan into action but it did not work out completely. We lacked real chances," added winger Sebastian Szymański.

Many young players played for both Poland and the Netherlands. How did the White-and-Reds play compared to the opponent? "The Netherlands is known for excellent training, especially technique training. As a matter of fact, you could see it yourself today. The skills of our young players are increasing, training is getting better. Just look at how many players get to play for clubs outside Poland. You can say this is a trend now. However, there are players who do not play in the starting 11 right away. Players sometimes need an adjustment period and wait for their coach to give them a chance to play. Still, I believe that more and more Polish young players will play in good clubs," concluded the head coach of the White-and-Reds.
