Robert Lewandowski: This is the best team I've played in since I've joined the national team
The captain of the Polish national team, Robert Lewandowski was a special guest at Friday's press conference in Arłamów. - I did not expect such a warm welcome from the crowd of supporters. Especially because I've heard that our hotel is situated in a quiet place. Well, yesterday, for sure it was not - Lewandowski smiled.
- On Saturday I played in the German Cup final, and then I was celebratinng the win with my team-mates. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday - I had some days off, I tried to relax, and I did not train. I think it was good for me and it's not the case that I lost or missed something, because the truth is that now I have a bigger thirst for football. I wanted to join the team earlier, but as soon as I talked to the coach, we agreed that the best option was to appear in Arłamów on Thursday, as other players (Łukasz Piszczek, Maciej Rybus and Grzegorz Krychowiak). There was no point in dividing us. However, I did not expect such a warm welcome from the crowd of supporters. Especially because I've heard that our hotel is situated in a quiet place. Well, yesterday, for sure it was not.
It's ubelievable how these few seconds that we spend with fans while posing for photos or giving them our autographs, make them happier. It's also good for us. We respect them and we are grateful for all their support. We will always try to find time to be at their disposal, but please remember that we cannot satisfy everyone. Please, do not also forget that the most important thing for us is to preapare to the European Championship in France as best as possible. We know that when it's a work time, we have to work. However the silence and the rest are also important - Lewandowski said. There is no doubt that currently Lewandowski is the hottest marksman in world football and the most popular player of our national team. That is also why recently few books about him have been published. - It's possible that students will have readings about you at schools soon - one of the journalists asked. - But as a compulsory reading? - Lewandowski laught. - There is all this "hustle and bustle" of media, but I keep calm and distance myself. I know it's impossible to cut off from media as all these things are related, but I try not to read too much about myself, and not to feel preoccupied. Lewandowski, who yesterday already attended the training session, assured: I prefer to focus on football. It is the most important thing for me.
- At first I spoke to the head coach and the coaching staff. They explained me what they have done so far and what exactly has already been trained. These theoretical issues were very important as I didn't want to waste time and I wanted to join the team immediately - he explained and revealed also that he has no plans to watch Saturday's Champions League final in Milan. - That's enough that I will not play there.
- Everyone knew that this season will be a very long and a very hard one. These three days of rest certainly helped me, but let's not talk about feeling tired, because it shouldn't be an issue here. I am sure that we will prepare well for the upcoming championship, and during the tournament we will do our best. Sometimes we may feel tired, but anyway, later we have to show our skills and experience. This is important - he assured.
The captain of the Polish national team did not sleep long hours on Friday. In the morning he got woken up by a doping control. - I was not going to open, but the team doctor' knocks at the door were so long and loud that I decided to do this. Obviously, I would prefer to sleep longer, but it was a force majeure. I have to admit that in recent weeks, I've passed this kind of anti-doping controls several times - Lewandowski said.
- There is a very good atmosphere around the Polish national team, but also the fans' awareness and knowledge of football is wider than during the EURO 2012 tournament which was held in Poland and Ukraine. In that time it was thought that if we play at home, therefore we have to get to the final. There are expectations and pressure also this time, but everyone is aware of how difficult and unpredictable sport football actually is - he added.
- I've been playing in the national team eight years now and I have to admit that we haven't had such a strong team yet. We have many talented players and we create a great team in which there is a lot of potential. Besides, we are also experienced thanks to the EURO 2012 tournament. Let's be honest, Poland is not the favourite to win the group in France and therefore it's not in our style to keep on saying that we will win all. We know we have to do this step by step and to fight in every match. I've talked also to my colleagues from the Germany team and they also have some fears. World champions also may get nervous. They respect our team and they know that we do not give up and we are not afraid of teams better than us.
We train hard and then we rest. We try to spend time together. If young players ask me questions about something, I try to advise them. I also keep asking questions those who are more experienced - he said.
- Have I changed since 2012? I hope I haven't aged visibly. I certainly changed my hairstyle. To be honest, I am a more mature football player now. I have become a better player, I am smarter tactically and technically. EURO in Poland has taught me a lot. I think you can't be under bigger pressure than when you're playing in such a tournament at home soil. So now we have to take advantage of this experience. Everyone may expierience different emotions, such as adrenaline or excitement. But we know that a lot depends on us. Emotions are important, but we can't let them get the upper hand. We want to concentrate and have work done. Chin up and fight! I've heard that Mr. President Andrzej Duda will visit us in Arłamów on Sunday. I hope he will bring us good luck - Robert Lewandowski added.
