POLAND AS A CANDIDATE TO HOST THE UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2029
The Polish Football Association decided to put forward its candidacy to host the Women's EURO, scheduled for 2029. "We want to create a special celebration of women's football here in Poland. It is a vital part of the Association's overall strategy. One of its four priorities," says Cezary Kulesza, President of the Polish Football Association. As a reminder, Poland will host the 2025 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship, as well as the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup a year later. "Our goal is also to host the Euros for the first national teams. This would be another big step in the development of women's football in Poland," adds Cezary Kulesza.
UEFA on Tuesday announced the start of the process to select the host country for the UEFA Women's Euro 2029. Applications to host the event can be submitted until 24 September and the host will be selected in December 2025. The tournament will feature 16 national teams. Apart from Poland, Denmark and Sweden have also announced their joint candidacy.
According to UEFA requirements, the tournament can be hosted by no more than two neighbouring countries with one stadium capable of holding 50,000 spectators, three with a capacity of 30,000 and four able to hold over 20,000. In total, the host country must provide eight stadiums that allow games to be played on a natural surface.
Poland was already a candidate to host the UEFA Women's Euro 2025; however, the UEFA Executive Committee decided that it would be held in Switzerland. So far, nine national teams have qualified for the women's 2025 tournament. The seven remaining teams will be selected in the play-offs scheduled for October and November. The Polish national team will also take part in these play-offs, facing Romania in the first match and, after a potential victory, Austria or Slovenia in the second.
The Polish Football Association has extensive experience in organising major UEFA and FIFA football events, including UEFA EURO 2012, the 2015 UEFA Europa League final, the 2017 Under-21 EURO, the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2021 UEFA Europa League final.
Based on 2023 decisions, the Polish Football Association has also been entrusted with organising as many as four upcoming major football events. In August, Poland will host the 2024 UEFA Super Cup (Warsaw), followed in 2025 by the UEFA Conference League final (Wrocław) and the European Women's Under-19 Championship. In 2026, Poland will also host the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
"This is certainly a great success for the Polish Football Association (PZPN), which is backed by a high rating for our Association and a guarantee of organising top-class football events. The organisation of so many international events is rarely entrusted to the same association. We are a reliable and proven partner for the entire football community. We have paid attention to detail every time, which has been recognised and appreciated. For us, this is a great source of pride. It is precisely the organisation of such grand events that the Polish Football Association has consistently pursued and will continue to pursue in the future. It is a great promotion of sport, football, the Association and our country as a whole," stressed Łukasz Wachowski, Secretary General of the Polish Football Association.
"That we have been awarded the organisation of the European Women's Under-19 Championship and the European Women's Under-20 Championship is proof of recognition of our efforts and commitment to the development of women's football. The 'Women's Football Strategy in Poland for 2022–2026' adopted by the Management Board of the Polish Football Association is one of the most important documents indicating the focus of our daily work, and hosting the international tournaments we have been awarded is another milestone on the way to its implementation. I am convinced that both events will be top-tier football celebrations. Our next goal is to host the Euros with the first women's national teams, popularising the sport in Poland. We are very much interested in this," says President Cezary Kulesza.
