Poland’s Team of the Centenary

From October 4th to November 20th the fans of Poland national team had a chance to select the best XI of the last 100 years. The final squad was revealed on the 6th of December at the grand celebration of PZPN's centenary.


There were many successes in the history of Polish football - three Olympic medals, two third places at the FIFA World Cup. The centenary of PZPN is the perfect time to honor the greatest players in country's history. For this reason PZPN has invited every fan to choose through dedicated platform their own Team of the Centenary. This unique online application was created to present and remind the rich history and personalities that have been a part of Polish football.

Additionally, in January 2019 the PZPN's President Zbigniew Boniek decided to create the special jury. Twenty seven football experts and thousands fans decided who should make the Team of the Centenary. Senator Andrzej Person has become a head of jury, while former national team coaches (Antoni Piechniczek, Jacek Gmoch, Paweł Janas, Jerzy Engel, Adam Nawałka and Henryk Apostel) joined in, as well as members of Media and Marketing committee and several Polish journalists. The official announcement of the Team was made at the PZPN's grand ceremony on December 6th.

The PZPN's Team of the Centenary

Józef Młynarczyk (born 20/09/1953, 42 matches/0 goals for national team). He was a member of Poland squad for the FIFA World Cup two times (1982, 1986), winning silver medal in 1982. Number one in Polish goal between 1980 and 1986, he was famous for his dedication because one time he was playing with a broken finger. He achieved great successes with his club, FC Porto, winning the European Cup in 1987.

Łukasz Piszczek (born 03.06.1985, 66/3). Played for Poland at four major tournaments, once at the FIFA World Cup (2018), and three times at UEFA EURO (2008, 2012, 2016). The best goal scorer at UEFA U-19 European Championship in 2004, he started his career as a striker and then switched to a right-back. At Borussia Dortmund he rose to be one of the top wide defenders in European football. One out of two Polish players who were at three UEFA EURO tournaments.

Władysław Żmuda (born 06.08.1954, 91/2). Member of Poland national team for four FIFA World Cup tournaments (1974, 1978, 1982, 1986), he won silver medal twice and another one at the Olympics in 1976. One of the most decorated Polish footballers who set the record of 21 games for Poland at the FIFA World Cup. Former coach of Poland youth national teams.

Jerzy Gorgoń (born 18.07.1949, 55/6). Gold and silver medalist at the Olympics (1972, 1976), he played at the FIFA World Cup (1974, 1978), winning silver medal in 1974. The rock at the heart of defensive block of the famous team coached by Kazimierz Górski. He stood out with his physicality, confidence and powerful long-distance strike.

Antoni Szymanowski (born 13.01.1951, 82/1). Member of Poland squads for the FIFA World Cup (1974, 1978), as well as Olympics (1972, 1976), where he won gold and silver medals. The legend of Wisła Kraków, he remains one of the best full-backs in the history of Polish football.

Henryk Kasperczak (born 10.07.1946, 61/5). Member of Poland squads for the FIFA World Cup (1974, 1978), as well as Olympics (1976). Silver medalist at the 1974 World Cup and 1976 Olympics. First team player under Kazimierz Górski, he played in every game at the FIFA World Cup in West Germany. Twice he won the domestic title with Stal Mielec, also reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup.

Kazimierz Deyna (born 23.10.1947, death 01.09.1989, 97/41). Member of Poland squads for the FIFA World Cup (1974, 1978), as well as Olympics (1972, 1976), where he won gold and silver medals. One of the most gifted players in Poland’s history, the legend of Legia Warsaw. Top goal scorer at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, he was selected to the best XI of the 1974 World Cup.

Zbigniew Boniek (born 03.03.1956, 80/24). Member of Poland squads for the FIFA World Cup (1982, 1986), he won the silver medal in 1982. Selected as one of the best one hundred players by FIFA in its history. He won the European Cup (1985) with Juventus, scored a hat-trick against Belgium at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, and was selected to the best XI of the tournament.

Grzegorz Lato (born 08.04.1950, 100/45). Member of Poland squads for the World Cup (1974, 1978, 1982) and Olympics (1972, 1976). Silver medalist (1974, 1982) and top scorer at the 1974 FIFA World Cup, gold and silver medalist at Olympics (1972, 1976). In three FIFA World Cup tournaments he scored a total of 10 goals this was a record in team's history. One of most decorated footballers in Poland.

Robert Lewandowski (born 21.08.1988, 112/61). Member of Poland squads at FIFA World Cup (2018) and UEFA EURO (2012, 2016). Scored the most goals in the history of Polish football, top goal scorer of both FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO qualifications. After scoring five goals in nine minutes for Bayern Munich against VfL Wolfsburg in the 2015/16 Bundesliga he was awarded four certificates by Guinness World Records.

Włodzimierz Lubański (born 28.02.1947, 75/48). Member of Poland squads for the FIFA World Cup (1978) and gold medalist at the 1972 Olympics. He made his first appearance for Poland at the age of 16 years and 188 days, which remains all-time record. Announced Poland's best player for the UEFA's 50th anniversary. Laureate of a prestigious UNESCO Fair Play award for the game against Denmark in 1977, when he choose not to score in order not to hurt the opposite goalkeeper. The second best goal scorer in Poland’s history.
